A Lifetime Friendship
50 Years of Collaboration: The Story of Zap Foto® and Candid Color Systems®

Lolo Cunningham
Marketing Coordinator
Over fifty years ago, Gary Limmroth and Jack Counts crossed paths on a college campus while searching for social photographers in the area. That meeting marked the beginning of something truly special. Sharing a mutual love for photography and a passion for preserving people’s memories, the two entrepreneurs have collaborated in social event photography since the 1970s. We had the chance to sit down with both to discuss the incredible impact this partnership has had on their lives and careers. Click the video above to watch our interview with Gary and Jack!
The Beginning of Zapfoto®
Gary Limmroth’s journey into photography was serendipitous. While photographing a football game, a man noticed the unique strobe light Gary was using and struck up a conversation. A few weeks later, the same man called Gary to photograph a fraternity Christmas party. Gary found the experience delightful and decided to continue photographing social events. Just six months later, he purchased the business, Zapfoto®, from its two founders and took full control.
At the time, Gary was working full-time as Chief Cinematographer at The University of Alabama. Balancing both roles proved challenging, but as Zapfoto’s® popularity grew, Gary recognized its potential. Taking a leap of faith, he left his secure university position to focus entirely on the burgeoning social photography business. Since then, he has led Zapfoto® with dedication and passion, helping it thrive for decades.
The Collaboration Between Zapfoto® and Candid Color Systems®
Gary and Jack have experienced the evolution of the photography industry firsthand. From spending hours and days developing bundles of film to the instant turnaround of digital photos, they have seen it all. Candid Color Systems® has revolutionized the speed of event photography through its innovative ViewFirst™ and PhotoMatch™ systems.
This enduring bond between Jack and Gary is a testament to the trust they have in each other’s businesses and their shared desire for success. Gary elaborated on this, stating, “It all comes down to friendship. I am friends with a ton of people at the lab, and it has never been a business relationship. I have always considered Jack and the Candid Color team my business partners. It is a family!”
Through their friendship and business partnership, Gary and Jack have traveled to multiple countries, photographed events with thousands of attendees, and even raced cars in Australia. Their journey together is a shining example of how mutual respect and camaraderie can create lasting success
“We Are in the Memory Business”
Many businesses sell products that lose value over time, but Gary and Jack’s business stands apart. They are in the memory business, helping people hold onto their favorite moments — from childhood milestones to life’s biggest celebrations and everything in between. These moments aren’t just special; they are deeply meaningful and an absolute joy to capture.
Gary shared a wonderful story that highlights what makes their work so unique:
“I was on a plane sitting next to a girl who goes to Alabama. We started talking about the annual Easy Rider fraternity date party, and she couldn’t stop laughing about how much fun she had. Then I told her, ‘You know, I’ve probably photographed your mom — and maybe even your grandmother — at that very same party.’ She couldn’t believe it! That tradition has been going strong for over 50 years. Being part of something that spans generations like that is incredible.”
Stories like this remind us why running a smooth and efficient photography operation matters. It’s not just about taking pictures; it’s about being part of people’s stories. Gary and Jack are there for life’s firsts, treasured traditions, and unforgettable memories. They preserve joy, nostalgia, and connection for generations to come. It’s more than work — it’s a privilege.
